Helsinki City Museum will open a new museum in May 2016 in a unique location at the corner of the capital’s iconic Senate Square. Visitors will be able to access buildings of great historic and cultural value, which until now have been used as office space. The city’s historic quarters will gain a new focal point, where the stories of the city and its people will come to life.
Access to the museum will be via entrances on Aleksanterinkatu and Katariinankatu. The museum will extend across much of the quarter’s northern side and will also encompass the Children’s Town exhibition at the Sederholm House. The museum quarter’s delightful inner courtyards will also become part of the museum experience.
In the new setting, the museum’s activities will also undergo an overhaul. Together with Helsinki’s residents, we hope to create something entirely new - something that we, for now, cannot even imagine. Above all, the new City Museum is intended to be a museum for all - and an opportunity for absolutely everyone to fall in love with Helsinki. Help us create a new museum for Helsinki!
